Annual Review of WMO-WIPPS and the Development of Key World Meteorological Centres in 2024

  • In the context of escalating global climate change and frequent extreme weather events, WIPPS, a core system under the WMO framework, is playing an increasingly prominent leading role. This study comprehensively tracks the developments of the WIPPS and the key global meteorological centres under its framework in 2024, providing an in-depth analysis of their activity adjustments, system upgrades, pilot projects, and the unique work of each centre. It also discusses their future directions based on related strategic plans. The research findings are as follows: 1) In 2024, WIPPS achieved significant results in both operational service and centre recognition. New professional operations were added, including global climate reanalysis, highlighting the focus on climate change and environmental issues. Additionally, the scope of centre recognition was expanded, such as the inclusion of the "Arctic Regional Climate Centre Network". 2) The WIPPS system underwent upgrades and iterations for several modules, significantly improving the temporal and spatial resolution of forecast data and expanding the range of parameter coverage, thereby providing more precise and detailed meteorological information to global users. 3) Pilot projects, including tropical cyclones, artificial intelligence, and multi-model integration, were promoted in parallel, effectively driving innovations in meteorological forecasting technology. 4) In 2024, key global meteorological centres made notable progress in forecast system upgrades, service channel innovations, and training and knowledge sharing. 5) Based on the United Nations Early Warnings for All initiative and the WMO strategic plan, WIPPS needs to transition towards a more service-oriented model in the future. It is expected to strengthen multi-faceted cooperation and exchange, advance new pilot projects such as those in hydrology, and improve data quality and forecasting accuracy, so as to address climate change challenges, enhance global meteorological services and provide robust support for global disaster mitigation and prevention.
